Market research

What should export market research include?

Useful export market research should reduce a business decision, not just produce a country report. It should tell you whether the market deserves a test and what must be true for that test to work.

The short answer

Research demand, buyer structure, competitors, route to market, price economics, standards and regulation, logistics, payment, local execution and real buyer feedback. End with a decision and the next test.

1. Demand and market structure

Estimate where the product is bought, by whom, in what volume and through which segments. Use both macro data and buyer-level evidence.

2. Competitors and alternatives

Identify local producers, imports, substitute products, positioning and price bands. The question is not just who competes, but why buyers choose them.

3. Route to market

Map direct sales, importers, distributors, agents, projects, retail or e-commerce as relevant. Different routes create different margins and control.

4. Regulation and operational barriers

Check standards, registration, labeling, customs, sanctions or export controls where relevant, banking, payment and any sector-specific requirements. Verify current rules with official or specialist sources.

5. Commercial economics

Build a landed-cost view: product price, freight, duties, taxes, channel margin, local service and expected payment terms.

6. Primary validation

Talk to representative buyers or partners. Ask what they buy, how they source, what blocks a new supplier and what evidence they require.

The output should be a decision

A useful report ends with: pursue, test, postpone or reject—and explains the assumptions behind that decision.

Frequently asked questions

Can desk research be enough?

It can narrow options, but buyer-level validation is usually valuable before committing significant resources.

How often should market research be updated?

Update it when pricing, regulation, logistics, sanctions, payment conditions or buyer behavior materially change.
